Horse

I don’t know what
was about you
that caught me,
more than my eye.
It was a body-long shaft,
an abrupt instant,
an explosion, force
almost beyond reckoning
that brought me still as death.
All seen in that moment
frozen in your stance,
head whipped firm
by knowing eyes, shining,
utter captive to the scent.
Now, rear up on
those hard round haunches,
turn on steel legs
and tear, extending,
with all bonds broken,
as only you can,
for home.
