Do you have a habit
you’d like to break?
I do.
I wonder what purpose
it serves
that is, for now, beyond me,
since I dislike it,
yet keep it close,
ready for use,
and use it I do, daily,
with ease and
without thought as a
housepainter wields his brush.
It’s truly an impediment—
too heavy boots—
and I trudge on
with truly no will
to shed them—
this ornery comfort.
I could pray about it,
but already know
the words, the plea.
So is it a prayer
or just another decoy?
As you can see,
I’m still not there,
and the habit still is.
