I never got
an F in college
but early on
a few Ds,
and felt a
whole apple
in my throat
that I was missing.
I got a few Fs
in life, but they were,
unlike the Ds in college,
signposts sure
of roads not taken,
and beckoning, tree-lined.
It amazes me
what we forget,
yet keep
to build a fire of life.
It redeems one to remember
the big lessons
and be gracious, too,
in heart, to the small ones,
long gone,
that seep
as much as blood
through every vein.
